The software helps the refinery register TWICs in PACS and check the authenticity and revocation status
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. — (July 13, 2011) Codebench, Inc., the leading provider of TWIC / HSPD-12 / FIPS-201 authentication and physical access control middleware, announced today that Pasadena Refining Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Petrobras America Inc., has deployed its PIVCheck Plus Desktop Software to register TWICs into their physical access control system, and OMNICheck Plus Mobile Software, a mobile validation software application that verifies PIV, TWIC, FRAC, CAC, and DESFire credentials.
Pasadena Refining Systems, Inc., in Pasadena, Texas, is a refiner and marketer of petroleum products located on the Houston Ship Channel. The facility, with more than 500 employees and contractors, has the capacity to refine 100,000 barrels of crude oil each day. Its workforce can increase to 1,600 workers during turnaround, a planned, periodic shut down of a refinery process unit or plant to perform maintenance, overhaul and repairs.
With PIVCheck Plus, the refinery is able to read, validate, authenticate and register their TWIC cards into the facility's Symmetry physical access control system from AMAG Technology.
With OMNICheck Plus, the refining facility is electronically verifying the authenticity of TWICs presented to a Datastrip DSV2+turbo mobile biometric reader. The software can also tell the operator whether that TWIC is already registered in the AMAG Symmetry Security Management System and, if so, whether the cardholder is allowed into the facility at that time.
"We're being proactive with our TWIC usage at our facilities," said Eric Finck, Security Supervisor at Pasadena Refining Systems, Inc. "To check the revocation status of a card, you have to automate the process and OMNICheck from Codebench provides that solution."
The implementation of PIVCheck Plus and OMNICheck Plus is part of a major security upgrade at Pasadena Refining Systems, Inc., which was in part paid for through the Port Security Grant Program. The program is designed to provide funding for transportation infrastructure security activities to implement Area Maritime Transportation Security Plans and facility security plans.
Consulting firm Transportation Security Associates, LLC, provided Pasadena Refining Systems, Inc. with its grant writing expertise, helping the petrochemical refinery secure grants to pay for various security upgrades. In addition, the firm provided program management for the project, which involved security assessment, planning and design for integrating TWIC credentials into the refinery's access control system, according to Jeff Brown, managing partner at Transportation Security Associates, LLC.
At Pasadena Refining Systems, Inc. the facility is using two desktop biometric smartcard readers to register TWICs and 6 handheld readers to check TWIC cards of employees and visitors. Later this year, it plans to purchase additional handheld terminals with OMNICheck Plus software at its tank farm facility located a mile from its refining facility.
"Codebench is pleased to provide Pasadena Refining Systems with the means to register their TWICs, and then validate those cards on mobile devices," said Geri Castaldo, CEO of Codebench, Inc. "From the mobile reader, our OMNICheck Plus software is able to not only tell whether the TWIC is valid but can also tell whether the TWIC cardholder is allowed into the facility. Our software suite is helping Pasadena Refining to fully exploit the security features of the TWIC cards."
